If you’re looking for your next lightweight, affordable sports-car, you’ve probably narrowed it down a choice between the Mazda MX-5 and the Scion FR-S (known as the Toyota GT86 in the rest of the world).
You’ll find numerous sources comparing these two models on the Internet, but it can be hard to get a true idea of how they match up to each other without actually driving them yourself. That being said, the hard numbers are certainly meaningful.
Both the all-new 2016 Mazda MX-5 and the 2016 Toyota GT86 are powered by a 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine, but both are not equal. The former gets better mileage and the latter gets more power, yet it’s not as simple as that. Because the MX-5 is so much lighter, it still beats the Toyota in a straight line and around the track despite having less power.
In fact, the MX-5’s lightweight nature makes it feel more responsive. It has a better front end, is more controllable, and though it’s a matter of opinion, we think it sounds and looks a heck of a lot better too. It’s even cheaper.
So, Mazda MX-5 vs. Scion FR-S—which one do you think wins?
