Upcoming Mazda Skyactiv 2 to Raise Fuel Economy in 2017

In recent years, Mazda has become the unspoken leader in fuel economy of major world automakers, with a lineup average of 34.1 mpg, raising the bar to for the rest of the industry. Mazda takes this leadership seriously and plans to keep it.

However, Mazda currently only sells models powered by gasoline. This makes Mazda’s lead particularly impressive, maintaining such fuel economy without hybrid models. Plus, Mazda has a new engine system on the horizon.

In an interview, CEO of Mazda North American Operations Masahiro Moro said that a new line of their Skyactiv engines will debut in 2017. These are the engines that have thus far led Mazda to their remarkable fuel economy stats.

It is safe to assume that Mazda Skyactiv 2 engines will raise the average fuel economy of a new Mazda vehicle even higher, maintaining Mazda’s lead throughout the industry.

Mazda MX-5 Cup

Mazda Reaches Milestone with 100th Mazda MX-5 Cup Racecar

As the culmination of Mazda performance engineering, the Mazda MX-5 Cup racecar is one of the most impressive models in the industry. Handcrafted over months and designed explicitly for the track, this Cup car is made to show the full potential of the MX-5, one of the most iconic roadsters around. Believe it or not, the 100th Mazda MX-5 Cup racecar recently sold, helping Mazda to reach a historic milestone.

According to Mazda, the Mazda MX-5 Cup racecar was ordered by the Monticello Motor Club, a world premier race track and country club near New York City. The Cup car comes with 80-percent stock parts, though it does get cold-air intake and exhaust headers. The standard 2.0-liter engine powers this model, though Mazda does remove significant weight by stripping the car of its passenger seat and insulation.

“When we announced this program, we set our target at 50 cars in the U.S. in 2016,” said John Doonan, director of motorsports at Mazda. “To double that goal in less than a year is a huge endorsement by our customers that they see this car as the best value in sports car racing today. We’re thrilled that the growing market for track day cars is seeing the MX-5 Cup car as an ideal purchase.”

The Cup car also gets thick tires to better grip the track, a mandatory roll cage to meet racing specifications, and some unique badging to showcase the Cup-car design. Overall, this 155-horsepower model weighs in at just over 2100 pounds, making it a blur on the track. MX-5 Cup cars often compete annually at the Battery Tender Global Mazda MX-5 Cup and the Road America race among other events.

how to cool your car in summer

How to Cool Your Car in Summer: Windows Down vs. A/C

During summer, drivers are always searching for the best ways to cool down their cars, whether you are rolling the windows down or cranking up the air conditioning. However, one of these methods uses significantly more fuel than the other. Read on to see how to cool your car in summer.

Rolling the windows down is usually how people cool their car when they first get in it. According to Slate, however, having your windows down can increase drag and lower fuel economy. Drag is created when airflow is restricted, allowing for more friction, therefore slowing your car. Thanks to a 2008 study performed by the Society of Automotive Engineers (SAE), it was revealed that around 68 miles per hour—roughly highway speeds—having the windows down is actually less efficient than using the air conditioning.

The air conditioning saps power from the engine because it operates by drawing power from the powertrain. Generally, having the air conditioning on reduces gas mileage by about 10 to 20 percent; nevertheless, at highway speeds, you may actually lose more efficiency by rolling the windows down.

What’s the answer? At low speeds, especially in the city, try and roll your windows down to get cool in the summer. When you hit the highway, switch on the air conditioner and roll up the windows. The SAE study is especially true for SUVs and crossovers, which tend to have more surface area. On small, aerodynamically designed models, though, your results may be slightly different.

Fireworks Safety Tips

Fireworks Safety Tips

This 4th of July, we want to make sure that everyone is staying safe when they are using fireworks. The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) says, “Fireworks were involved in an estimated 10,500 injuries treated in U.S. hospital emergency departments during calendar year 2014.” So this year, follow the below firework safety tips to keep you, your family, and your friends safe!

  • Keep a bucket of water or a garden hose handy in case of fire or other mishap.
  • Never carry fireworks in a pocket or shoot them off in a metal or glass container.

Mazda3 production

Mazda3 Production Surpasses Five Million Mark

Just 13 years, the Mazda3 first arrived on the road. Two months ago, Mazda3 production reached its five-million-units milestone.

This production milestone is a new record for Mazda. It is only the second Mazda to reach five million units of production, the Mazda Familia is the other. And, it reached this goal in less than 13 years, much faster than the Familia. It is manufactured in various locations around the world, including Japan, China, Thailand, and Mexico.

The Mazda3 is one of the most important Mazda models since it accounts for nearly a full third of total sales volume. It entered its third generation in 2013. With the addition of SKYACTIV TECHNOLOGY and Kodo—Soul of Motion design, the Mazda3 is both high-tech and stylish—two things you wouldn’t normally expect from a compact car.

As one of the most critically acclaimed small cars in the world, the Mazda3 is not going anywhere. If you love driving, but want something small and fuel efficient, the Mazda3 is the car for you. It will give you a much more connected driving feel than the competition while still delivering excellent fuel efficiency and eye-catching styling. Take it out for a test drive today at El Dorado Mazda.

MISD Teachers of the Year

McKinney, TX (May 25, 2016) – As she eases into the black leather driver’s seat of a brand new Chevy Camaro, McKinney ISD Secondary Teacher of the Year Carol Winters says with a laugh, “ I chose something that I wouldn’t normally drive.”

Maybe so, but within moments, the veteran AP English teacher from McKinney High School looks right at home in this new set of wheels that is sure to be the envy of her students.

Sales Manager Rusty McDonald will hand the keys over to her in a few minutes, and it’ll be Winters’ to drive for a year – free of charge – courtesy of El Dorado Chevrolet Mazda of McKinney.

While Winters soaks up the coolness of her new Camaro, Megan Whittaker smiles and opens the back hatch of a new 2016 Chevy Equinox. “I teach Pre-K, and I carry a lot of bins back and forth between school and home. There’s no way I could fit everything in that car,” she laughs, gesturing toward Winters’ Camaro. As the 2016 MISD Elementary Teacher of the Year, Whittaker is receiving a new vehicle too.

Megan Whittaker
“It’s truly, truly an honor,” says McDonald of the opportunity to offer the use of these vehicles to Winters and Whittaker. “It’s awesome. We feel very fortunate to be able to help.”

It’s one way the dealership hopes to show its appreciation for the teachers of MISD.
El Dorado has been a strong supporter of the district for some time. In 2011, when the FAA program needed a truck to haul projects to livestock shows, El Dorado donated a new Chevy Silverado One-ton Crew cab. The dealership also sponsors the Teacher of the Month recognition on 97.5 KLAK as well as the radio station’s end of the year banquet which honors the teachers spotlighted throughout the year. And, in 2015, they launched this Teacher of the Year vehicle program as another opportunity to give back.

The generosity of El Dorado Chevy Mazda is not taken for granted.

“I just think it’s amazing that a car dealership would show this much appreciation to our teachers and our community,” says Whittaker. “They’re a business, and I know that they could be making money from these cars, but instead they’re showing their appreciation for the school district.”

What better time to hop into a new car than summer? School will roll back around soon enough, and the time for loading up bins and teaching supplies will be here again before we know it.

But, for now, it’s time to relax a little…and just cruise.
